While some claim that one server OS should solve all of an enterprise’s competing needs, a look inside any data center shows us that reality is very different. Nearly all businesses — by choice or necessity — support multiple platforms. Many servers run applications that are tied to a specific OS, and others may simply not justify an upgrade or replacement. Coexistence is the status quo.

Still, the majority of workloads are transportable, and building the right OS strategy can be the cornerstone of an effort to increase operational efficiency and reduce costs. Rebalancing servers without disrupting existing processes requires planning, experimentation and a precise understanding of goals and resources, but if managed properly, it can provide dramatic reductions in TCO and free technical and financial resources for other projects.
