New smartphones, a new operating system, and a new foray into gaming will likely be the focus at Google’s I/O developer conference, a three-day event for app developers and hardware makers that starts Tuesday.
Attendees, along with tech fans at home watching the livestream, will be closely following the conference’s keynote presentation, when Google CEO Sundar Pichai and top executives announce new software updates and products. Google hasn’t said what it will unveil, but that hasn’t stopped the rumors.
Here’s a roundup of what to expect from this year’s Google I/O.
It’s probably the worst-kept secret heading into Google I/O. The buzz is that the company will introduce Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL smartphones, featuring designs that are similar to the Pixel 3, and Pixel 3 XL released last year. That includes big screens and a notch at the top of the devices that houses the front-facing camera and earpiece. Unlike their predecessors though, which cost around $800 each, the Pixel 3a lineup will be more budget-friendly.
Typically Google executives spend a big chunk of their Google I/O keynote talking about a new version of the Android operating system. This year, the update will be called Android Q.
The company actually released an Android Q beta version to testers and developers in March. And, according to leaks, the operating system will come with a slightly refreshed design that will make using it easier. The Android Q reportedly will also have improved shortcuts to better send content to contacts across different apps. The Q also may offer a dark mode, which makes apps darker to reduce eye strain, along with improved privacy features to limit how much data apps can collect about you.
Google has been pushing heavily into the smart home in recent years, and the trend will likely continue this year.
During I/O, Google is expected to discuss improvements to Assistant, the virtual personal assistant it bundles in smart home devices. We don’t know much about any those improvements, but Google’s is in a fierce battle with rival AmazonAlexa.
On the hardware side, Google may announce a new smart home device called the Google Nest Hub Max that comes with a 10-inch screen. The device will also likely come with Assistant built-in so you can use it to do things like turn off lights in the home and adjust the temperature on your smart thermostat. It will also be a direct competitor to Amazon’s Echo Show, which comes with similar functionality and has a 10.1-inch screen. Amazon’s device costs $230. We don’t know yet how much Google might charge for its alternative.
Last year, Google said that it’s working on Android improvementsthat would allow the software to work better on foldable phones. And there’s a good chance that feature will come up at Google I/O.
Samsung was expected to be the first smartphone maker to release a foldable phone this year, but it was forced to delay its premiere last month after early reviewers had problems with its screen. The company is expected to release the device later this month.
But it won’t be alone. Chinese smartphone maker Huawei is also working on a foldable phone, and most industry watchers believe other companies will follow.
At the Game Developers Conference in March, Google unveiled a new cloud-based video gaming servicecalled Stadia. Developers will be able to sell their games to customers through the service. Players who access those games will be able to stream them on their computers without needing a video game console. Google has shared few details about Stadia, but it will likely reveal more at I/O.

Apple is giving customers new ways to recycle their iPhones. It’s part of the company’s lofty long-term goal of using only recycled or renewable materials to make its products.
On Thursday, Apple released its 2019 Environment Report outlining the steps it is taking to help protect the environment from the negative impacts of its own business.
Last year, the company unveiled an iPhone-recycling robot named Daisy. It now has two of these robots. They can each take apart 1.2 million used iPhones per year and recover their valuable materials.
Apple says that thanks to new upgrades, Daisy can also disassemble 15 different types of iPhones. It can take 200 phones apart per hour. (Before Daisy, Apple used a recycling robot named Liam. Daisy is about one-third of the size of its predecessor and has more advanced capabilities).
For the first time, materials recovered by Daisy are making their way into new Apple products this year. For example, aluminum the robot extracts from an older iPhone is being reused in new Macbook Air laptops, according to the company.
“We’re almost trying to remake the current supply chain for technology because right now that has not been one of the goals of technology,” Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, told CNN Business. “Tech is all about getting innovations into the hands of potential customers as fast as possible, and I don’t think a lot of folks are considering part of that innovation to be using recycled material.”
Apple is trying to make it easier for people to get their old iPhones to Daisy robots, too. For example, customers can return eligible models to Best Buy stores in the United States or to retailer KPN in the Netherlands, and they will be taken apart by Daisy. Users can also turn in devices for recycling at Apple stores or online via Apple’s Trade In program.
The company is also opening a new “Material Recovery Lab” in Austin, Texas. The 9,000-square foot facility will work to find new ways to recycle using robotics and machine learning. Engineers and academics will work with the lab on testing and research using giant electronic-waste recyclers.
In 2016, the world produced 44.7 million metric tons of e-waste, and only 20% of it was recycled properly, according to a 2017 report from the United Nations University and other organizations. E-waste includes discarded electronics such as TVs, cell phones and refrigerators.
Apple says it refurbished over 7.8 million of its devices in 2018 and helped reroute more than 48,000 metric tons of e-waste from ending up in landfills.
The company is taking a second look at the elements and raw materials it uses to make its products, and researching ways they can be recycled. For example, recycled cobalt is being used to make batteries for new Apple products.
Last week, Apple said that 44 of its suppliers are committed to using 100% renewable energy. Last year, the company announced that all of its retail stores, data centers and corporate offices now run on 100% clean energy themselves.
“It’s going to be a ton of work,” Jackson said of Apple’s environmental goals. “We’re really trying to get materials into our products that are recycled more and more. We hope other companies do the same. It’s a big goal.”

Apple is continuing its iPhone trade-in push today with a new ad imploring users to “do one last great thing with your iPhone.” Apple’s pitch is that by trading in your iPhone, it can be refurbished and sold to someone else, or recycled in a responsible manner.

An NBC Profile is required for all users to be able to vote. NBC also has reported that, “After you have signed up or signed in to your NBC profile, and when the Overnight Voting Window is open, click on the artist(s) of your choice to assign votes to the artist. Submit your vote assignments by clicking on “Submit Votes” button. You may assign, save and change your votes at any time prior to the end of the applicable Overnight Voting Window. Once the applicable Overnight Voting Window closes, your vote assignments will be submitted and counted as valid (subject to the limitations below). You may vote via the App up to ten (10) times per artist per email address, regardless of sign in method used, during each Overnight Voting Window. Any App Voting attempts above ten (10) votes per artist per e-mail address will NOT be counted as valid.”
When online voting, you can visit nbc.com/VoiceVote and sign up for your free NBC Profile in order to vote. The same rules apply here, as they do for the app, as far as usage and voting numbers go.
Fans can vote by using the Xfinity X1 set-top box or xfinity.com/VoiceVote, and, like the other voting methods, there is a 10-time voting limit during each Overnight voting window.
The info about how to vote via Xfinity X1 reads as follows: “To vote via the Xfinity X1 set-top box, you must have an Xfinity X1 set-top box, Xfinity X1 remote and an active Xfinity subscription that includes NBC (fees may apply). You can access the X1 voting screen on your television during the Overnight Voting Window(s) (defined below) using three methods. If you do not see the Xfinity X1 Vote Graphic, use your X1 remote to search for The Voice and pull up the Show page. On the Show page, you will see a bar on the bottom of the screen with various options, such as options for series information and recording episodes. Use your X1 remote to select the “Vote” option. Your third method is to use the voice command, “Vote for The Voice,” via your X1 remote during the voting window. This voice command should activate the voting screen on your screen. Once you have arrived at the Xfinity X1 voting screen, use your Xfinity X1 remote to select an artist and confirm your vote.”

If you want to vote by using Apple Music, fans can vote by streaming Eligible Song(s) on Apple Music but you must have a valid Apple Music subscription to do this. The limit is 10 streams per Apple ID per Eligible Song. Whichever artist gets the most streams will receive the “Apple Music Bonus,” which multiplies the artist’s Apple Music streams by five, for the applicable Eligible Song(s). This is definitely beneficial for the most streamed artist throughout the competition.
If you are voting for your favorite singers via Twitter, then you are probably voting for duet performances or an Instant Save situation. To vote by using Twitter, you must have a valid Twitter account, which you can register for on Twitter.com. You must set your privacy settings to public in order to vote this way.
For any additional voting questions or inquiries about the rules, you can find all the info you need here.

Google added a new mid-range device to its phone line-up Tuesday: The new Pixel 3a is available for $399 effective immediately. The company is also bringing its entire phone line-up, including last year’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL, to a range of new mobile carriers, including Sprint and T-Mobile.
The Pixel 3a comes with a 5.6-inch display with a screen resolution of 1,080 × 2,220 pixels. The company is also shipping a larger version, the Pixel 3a Max, with a 6-inch screen with 2160 x 1080 pixels, and costs $479. Both versions will be available in 3 colors Google calls Just Black, Clearly White and Purple-ish.
Google’s new mid-range phone isn’t as powerful as its flagship devices, as it is relying on a budget-minded Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor, as opposed to the Snapdragon 845 that’s at the heart of the Pixel 3. The company did integrate the same camera also available on the Pixel 3. That camera benefits from Google’s advanced in artificial intelligence to offer features like Night Mode, a special HDR mode that optimizes images under low-light conditions.
Both the Pixel 3a and the Pixel 3a XL come with 64GB of storage on board, with no option to add more storage. For comparison, the Pixel 3 also ships with 64GB, but consumers who are willing to pay more can get the device with up to 128Gb of storage. Another Pixel feature missing from the Pixel3a is wireless charging
The company is also walking back a controversial design decision for its high-end phones: The Pixel 3a will once again have a headphone jack, something that Google started to omit starting with the Pixel 2 that launched in 2017. There is no word on whether the Pixel 4, which is expected to launch this fall, will follow that lead.
As a Google device, the Pixel 3a will be first in line to get a bunch of features introduced at the company’s I/O developer conference Tuesday. These include a new augmented reality mode for Google Maps that offers turn-by-turn directions, which is coming to Pixel phones starting this week. In fall, Pixel phones will also get access to a range of new privacy and digital wellbeing features.
Google announced the new phone models and software features during its Google I/O developer conference in Mountain View, Calif. Tuesday. The company also used the event to unveil a new 10-inch smart displaycalled the Nest Hub Max, and announced some changes to the privacy and third-party app integrations for its home hardware.

It is sounding as though SEGA is potentially gearing up to release a new game in the Super Monkey Ball series. The company have registered a trademark for Tabegoro! Super Monkey Ball in Japan. Gematsu points out that “Tabegoro” means “ripe,” “in season,” or “good to eat.” It has been a while since a new Super Monkey Ball game has been released, but there is always the possibility that it could be a mobile title. Hopefully SEGA will fill us in soon!
