New partnership could produce a 3D printer that prints objects 500 times faster and 10 times larger
3D printing is slow; so slow that printing an object several feet long is an arduous task that can take days. As a result, most 3D printers are tailored to printing small objects that take a few hours at most.
That could change for industrial-sized printers after the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and machine tool manufacturer Cincinnati Incorporated signed an agreement this month, 3Dprint.com reported today. The partnership will focus on creating a 3D printer capable of printing objects at 200-500 times the speed and 10 times the size of most current printers.
ORNL and Cincinnati Inc. will build the printer by adapting an existing Cincinati Inc. laser cutting machine to include 3D printing hardware. Instead of relying on spools of string-like plastic, it will rely on pellets of an unnamed polymer.
Pellets are both a cheaper and more flexible source of “ink” for a 3D…

Watch a group of drones fly in a coordinated flock
A team of researchers based out of Hungary successfully flew a flock of quadcopter drones outside over a field, Nature reported today. Without any central leader, the drones were able to follow a leader or organize themselves into a formation.
Their work is based on natural flocks, within which individuals respond to each other in real time. The team said this is the first time a true flock like this has been flown outside. Previous efforts were only able to fly indoors or fly the drones at different heights to avoid collisions.
“It is the first outdoor demonstration of how biologically inspired rules can be used to create resilient yet dynamic flocks,” Princeton University collective animal behavior scientist Iain Couzin told Nature. “[It suggests] we will be able to achieve large, coordinated robot flocks much sooner than many would have anticipated.”
Of course, the researchers chose to fly the 10 drones…

Ovuline says its algorithms have led to 50,000 pregnancies
Add another notch in the belt of machine learning. Fertility startup Ovuline announced on Wednesday that its Ovia Fertility mobile app has helped 50,000 users get pregnant in the past 18 months, thanks in large part to all the data its users have supplied for its algorithms to analyze.
Ovuline’s success at predicting fertility is, like so many other things in 2014, the result of smartphones and lots of data, co-founder and CEO Paris Wallace said during a phone call on Wednesday. Whereas traditional fertility studies might have topped out at hundreds of users, he explained, Ovuline’s free app has been downloaded nearly 300,000 times. Its users are adding 1 million data points every two and a half days, or 250 per minute.
“Really, at Ovuline we’re doing the largest study on fertility and pregnancy that’s ever been done,” he said.
Like all things machine learning, the more data Ovuline…
