The answer is yes, of course. This multi-billion-dollar juggernaut will roll along regardless of who’s chairing the board. The bigger question is would it be better off with a new CEO and a new chairman both learning new, very big jobs, together.

On the plus side, however you feel about Bill Gates, he built a software colossus out of the company he co-founded with Paul Allen 39 years ago. to recap, Bloomberg reported Thursday that the Microsoft board is close to naming Satya Nadella as the next CEO — which would be news. Bigger news was the contention that the board may ask Gates to relinquish his chairmanship.

He was the first CEO and has remained chairman of the board after handing that job over to his friend (well then-friend anyway) and colleague Steve Ballmer in January 2000. Even folks who derided early Windows as derivative and buggy, will admit…

Robert Zemeckis e Bob Gale se uniram ao produtor Colin Ingram para transformar o longa de 1985, “De volta para o Futuro” (Back to the Future) em um musical.

On this week’s episode of The Gigaom Show, we dive into the big Google-Motorola-Lenovo news, which ends a curious chapter in the history of Google and Android. We brought in Janko Roettgers to defend his point that the standalone social TV app is dead, stickers or no stickers. And we catch up with Stacey Higginbotham’s venture into the captivating but weird world that is Washington, D.C., where policy makers are both more earnest and more clueless when it comes to technology than you’d think.

The Berlin startup scene has its first big exit of 2014, and indeed one of its largest yet: navigation veteran Telenav(s tnav) has picked up local OpenStreetMap specialist Skobbler for $23.8 million.

It’s not just good news for Berlin, either. For those involved in OpenStreetMap (OSM), a global, crowdsourced, open-source mapping project, it represents a potentially healthy consolidation. OSM founder Steve Coast recently joined Telenav, and Skobbler is the leader in OSM integration and commercial use. The team’s all together now, and all those 1.5 million OSM contributors will now see their work put to greater use — with a good deal more investment, too.

The nice thing about OSM is that, even when the data finds its way into commercial maps, anyone can still download it and find their own use for it. This is a markedly different model from Google’s, in which contributors can improve Google Maps…

Los Angeles TV stations KLCS and KJLA will conduct an interesting experiment in the next few months: they will try to merge their digital broadcasts onto a single TV channel.

The two stations are working with wireless industry group CTIA to investigate the feasibility of sharing TV airwaves, which could potentially clear up spectrum for commercial mobile broadband services. Why is this important? The Federal Communications Commission’s broadcast incentive auction is a little more than a year on the horizon. And the aim of that auction is to identify vast chunks of the 600 MHz TV airwaves that could be used by carriers for 4G and by the tech industry for unlicensed broadband.

To accomplish that, the FCC and the mobile industry need the cooperation of the broadcasters. If they don’t agree to part ways with their spectrum than there’s not going to be much of an auction…

While fighting through the ever-thickening fog on the evening before the main event at Pebble Beach, Nick and I were attempting to do some car-spotting before the sun disappeared and the fog descended, which ended up thwarting a good amount of our efforts to get some good pictures.  Luckily, that didn’t happen with this Spyker C8, which certainly wasn’t at all camera-shy.
