If you’re anything like my wife, you’ll love Amazon’s Kindle Fire HDX 8.9
Amazon’s(s amzn) new Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 is definitely a slick device that competes well at $379 compared to Apple’s(s aapl) $499 iPad Air. It, and the Kindle Fire tablets that came before, are better suited to a specific type of tablet user though.
For example, I ordered the original Kindle Fire two years ago, only to find it really didn’t meet all of my needs. Instead of returning the tablet, however, my wife scoffed it up. For the past several weeks, I’ve used a review unit of the latest Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 and ironically a similar situation arose: I have no interest in buying one but my wife ordered her own after using it for 15 minutes.
Different needs dictate different tablets
So what’s the difference between us, aside from her having good looks? She’s more than satisfied with the experience that Amazon provides, while I…

One Direction Will Be Appearing On Episode of Sesame Street! @onedirection
One Direction paid a visit to the set of Sesame Street not only to say hello to Big Bird but also to record some segments from an upcoming educational show where the boy band will be featured! During their visit, the band got to take a photo with the Big Yellow Bird. The Sesame Street Twitter page tweeted the photo with the caption:“Guess who’s 1D’s “biggest” fan? (And thanks for visiting Sesame Street,
@onedirection!)”I guess we can say Big Bird is 1D’s biggest fan. You can catch One Direction during the 45th season of Sesame Street which is set to premiere next fall.

New vision algorithm will label you ‘goth,’ try to sell you black makeup
University of California, San Diego researchers have developed an algorithm that’s quite impressive from a computer science standpoint, but might give some people flashbacks to high school. The technique uses machine learning to figure out the most-common visual characteristics of certain groups of people (e.g., hipsters, goths and surfers) and trains an algorithm that can label group photos accordingly.
This way, you don’t have to tell a site like Facebook that you’re into The Cure or many-zippered pants — it will know just from looking at your pictures. When it comes to labeling people, though, the algorithm is an equal opportunity offender. It’s trained to identifty eight popular subcultures, according to Wikipedia: biker, country, goth, heavy metal, hip hop, hipster, raver and surfer. However, “star quarterback with a new Mustang” isn’t one of them.
Jokes aside, this is a pretty interesting project from a computer vision perspective, even if the…

Researchers create a more accurate alternative to Wi-Fi for tracking people through walls
Back in June, MIT researchers revealed they had figured out how to use Wi-Fi to track moving objects through walls. Today, the same team announced they have refined their system to be even more precise by switching to radio signals.
The system, known as “WiTrack,” works with the help of four antennae. One transmits a signal and the other three take in signals that bounce back. Based on how long it takes a signal to return, WiTrack can calculate an object’s distance from the antennae and map movement.
“Because of the limited bandwidth, you cannot get very high location accuracy using Wi-Fi signals,” graduate student Fadel Adib said in a release. “WiTrack transmits a very low-power radio signal, 100 times smaller than Wi-Fi and 1,000 times smaller than what your cell phone can transmit.”
Along with improving the precision of the tracking to 4 to 8 inches, WiTrack’s advantage…

Yahoo’s webmail outage continues to frustrate users
Yahoo (s yhoo) may have spent most of this year trying to claw its way back to internet relevancy, but a days-long webmail outage is fraying the goodwill the company has built among its loyal users.
According to TechCrunch, the company has received an avalanche of complaints, as high as 280 in a single hour, due to a partial outage that the company deemed “scheduled maintenance.”
But not only has there been limited communication regarding how and when the outage is supposed to be fixed, but that troubles with the service have been ongoing — some users are reporting days without email, others have mentioned previous experiences with the same issue.
Not only are people grousing on Twitter, but Yahoo Mail’s Facebook page is getting a similar treatment, and the company has provided the same, generally canned responses to the outrage as before. Interestingly, the page also notes that…
