Hadoop gets more versatile, but data is still king
Hadoop, the open source big-data framework, has gradually evolved from being a shiny object in the laboratory to an increasingly serious tool finding its place in the Enterprise. At Gigaom, we’ve covered Hadoop’s increasing maturity, and completeness as an enterprise technology, because that’s been the story. But now the story is changing.
The change emanates from the release of Hadoop 2.0 and the rapid standardization on that release’s new resource management engine, YARN. YARN moves Hadoop out of the world of batch processing, to the interactive world. We’ve covered that too. But while the change in the story builds on that facet of YARN, it pivots rather dramatically.
It’s a YARN world, we’re just computing in it
Hadoop used to be a self-contained product. Now it’s a platform – a stage that showcases a number of other products. Whether Spark or Storm or Cascading or Drill or whatever the next…

The floodgates open: Tool lets Android apps run on computers with Chrome
Sometimes being open is a blessing and a curse.
Take the new App Runtime for Chrome (ARC): It’s a software beta [company]Google[/company] created to get Android apps running on Chrome OS devices, with four initial apps supported. Once ARC hit the wild though, it quickly turned into a way to get nearly any Android app running on Chromebooks and Chromeboxes. And from there, all sense of control was lost because the ARC can now be used to run Android apps on a PC or Mac that has the Chrome browser installed.
Google surely wanted to take things slow here, and officially, it has. Since both the Android and Chromium OS platforms are relatively open, however, you can’t have it both ways: You can either control the code and experience or you can’t.
We chat in detail about ARC and Android apps on Chrome extensively on this week’s Chrome…

Got style? Check some of these amazing round Android Wear faces
Google is working on an official API for custom Android Wear watches faces, which will let developers design their own looks. That hasn’t stopped some third-party faces from appearing online, such as the Star Trek themed one we highlighted in July . There’s even an Android app available in the Play Store for $0.99 called Facer that can be used to design your own watch faces or install a face created by someone else.
Now that the first circular Android Wear smartwatch is available, the Moto 360, I’ve been seeing some incredible watch faces that take full advantage of the traditional round shape. Some were designed in Facer while others were created in detail using more advanced 3D modeling software. Either way, they’re all a big leap forward from the official faces created by [company]Google[/company] and its Android Wear partners.
Here’s a small sampling of some of the best designs, reproductions and…

How impressive is the camera in iPhone 6 and 6 Plus? Let Iceland show you
If you’re among the thousands standing in line for a new iPhone, you probably have a little time to kill. So this 8 minute video demonstration of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus cameras might help pass the time. Even better, it will show off the capabilities of the camera you’re very likely to be carrying with you everywhere in the coming months.
After attending last week’s [company]Apple[/company] event, Austin Mann traveled to Iceland with the pair of new iPhones and used them for both still imagery and video capture.
The result? There are arguably better cameras on the market or in other smartphones — I’m looking at you Lumia line — but Mann’s video and stills shows that the updated camera in Apple’s phones is impressive. Aside from excellent results in various lighting situations, the continuous auto-focus video feature worked well and is a welcome addition to…

Samsung is teaming with PayPal for mobile payments on a watch
In the wake of Apple Pay coming to the Apple Watch early next year, Samsung is working on its own mobile payment strategy. And instead of going it alone, it has a highly motivated partner: The company is working with PayPal to bring secure mobile payments to the wrist.
Business Korea pointed out the effort and added Synaptics to the mix, whose technology may be used for fingerprint authentication, according to a Samsung executive:
We are currently developing the smart watch equipped with fingerprint identification technology and relevant solutions through cooperation with PayPal, the world’s most renowned financial transaction service company, as well as Synaptics, a global company specialized in biometric verification. By the earliest, the third generation smart watch to be released early next year will have this new system in which payment is authorized immediately when users identify themselves through biometric sensors such as a fingerprint or login.
The…
