Following the recent release of a Chromebox , Asus is planning to offer a pair of Chromebooks(s goog), the company’s first such devices. The plans are shown on a reported Asus strategic document found by VR-Zone and spotted by Liliputing . No details about the Chromebooks are available in the document except for the device models: C200 and C300.

VR-Zone suggests that these two models may refer to 11.6- and 13-inch editions of the Asus Chromebooks, a reasonable idea. It’s also possible that Asus built the two Chromebooks with different processors since Chrome OS currently runs on chips from both ARM(s armh) and Intel(s intc).

I’ve been waiting for Asus to build a Chromebook since it first announced its intent to enter the Chrome OS market in May of last year.

Why? None of the current Chromebook makers — HP(s hpq), Samsung, Lenovo and Asus — offer laptops with…

Google(S goog) has taken the unusual step of publishing the full text of its EU antitrust settlement proposal, which has received approval from Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia.

The proposal would see Google reconfigure its results page in Europe to give rivals to its own services equal prominence. It would also require Google to stop scraping content from search rivals, and stop locking ad clients into its platform with anticompetitive terms and conditions.

It is very important to note that Google has not settled the case yet, as many otherwise reputable outlets suggested last week. Almunia is happy, but a good few other commissioners — who collectively comprise the EU executive — are not. A spokewoman for Almunia’s office confirmed today that it could be months before the case is settled, if indeed that’s what happens.

All of which makes the tone of Google’s Friday blog post somewhat disingenuous –…

Dropbox just scored a world-class operations veteran for its executive team: Dennis Woodside, who was until last month the CEO of Google(s goog)’s Motorola Mobility, has just joined the storage outfit as chief operating officer.

Woodside had been at Google for over a decade. He only took over Motorola Mobility, which Google sold to Lenovo in January, in May 2012. Prior to that, he was president of Google Americas, and before that he headed up other regional Google operations in Europe and emerging markets.

Though a lot of that work involved dealing with ad agencies and the like, it’s fair to say Woodside knows a thing or two about selling software-as-a-service into the enterprise and small business and striking partnerships to aid that effort. Which is handy, because that’s what Dropbox is trying to do.

Though this direction had been apparent for a good year or so – in…

Photo-sharing app Frontback (which, as its name implies, takes photos from the front and back cameras on an iPhone simultaneously) built on hype throughout the summer of 2013 and launched with relative fanfare in August, thanks to the selfie photo trend and the popularity of similar apps.

But after raising $3 million in the fall , the company’s eight-person team in San Francisco fell silent for a few months, introducing updates to its app with no fanfare. On Thursday, the company released a new version of its iPhone (s aapl) app, and spoke up about the health of the company.

Frontback 1.7 fills in standard features that were were missing from the previous version. Notifications are finally included, enabling users to see new pictures from those they follow. There is also a self-timer that allows users to take shots of what they see, then prepare for a good selfie reaction.

However, comments…

Browse the web today and if people aren’t talking about Comcast’s bid to buy Time Warner Cable, they’re talking about how Android isn’t as open as Google would have you think.

Except this really isn’t news. Nor is it that different from other software arrangements in the market. And it’s not even as complicated as you might think.

It’s really not that complicated

Let’s keep it simple for a second and then look at the situation in greater detail. Russell Holly from Geek.com nailed it on Twitter this morning:

He’s right. And guess what: This has been the case since Android(s goog) debuted in 2008. I don’t expect the situation to change any time soon although the Wall Street Journal today reported that the EU is looking into this:

“Google Inc. says its Android mobile operating system is “open.” But newly discovered documents reveal the strings…

Late Wednesday night, word leaked that Comcast was planning to make a friendly bid for fellow cable company Time Warner, and on Thursday morning that deal was confirmed with an announcement from the companies involved. In case you are trying to get up to speed on what the impact of the deal might be and whether it is likely to succeed, here’s a rundown of the major points:

What’s happening?

Comcast describes the deal in this way: “The agreement is a friendly, stock-for-stock transaction in which Comcast will acquire 100 percent of Time Warner Cable’s 284.9 million shares outstanding for shares of CMCSA amounting to approximately $45.2 billion in equity value. Each Time Warner Cable share will be exchanged for 2.875 shares of CMCSA, equal to Time Warner Cable shareholders owning approximately 23 percent of Comcast’s common stock.”

Quartz has summed up the rationale behind the proposed merger with one…
