Beating last year’s first weekend sales, Apple says it sold 10 million new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus phones between last Friday and Sunday. That’s a record, topping the first weekend sales of last year’s iPhone 5c and 5s models. However, it’s not a big leap over the prior model year, which reached 9 million sales.

I actually expected around 12 million or more new iPhones to be sold this weekend, given the buzz and the record 4 million pre-orders for Apple’s newest handset. [company]Apple[/company] doesn’t provide sales estimates, so we don’t know what it expected, although today in a statement Apple CEO Tim Cook said, “Sales for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus exceeded our expectations for the launch weekend and we couldn’t be happier.”
