If we can add connectivity to a toilet, a desk or an egg tray we can add it to anything. Even socks! But when it comes to buying connected devices, most people think consumers are going to start with a single product, one that they buy because they want the cool new feature or convenience the connectivity buys them.

For example, the Nest thermostat is connected, but the internet is a very small part of its attractiveness. Instead people are after the status that the well-designed device confers as well as the promise of saving money on their AC and heating bill. The internet enables one of those features, but isn’t the selling point.

So as we pulled together our connected gift guide, we tried to take that idea into consideration. What are the devices that might make life a little easier — be it as part of…

A British startup called Bluenio has revealed what it claims is the world’s first Bitcoin payment smartcard – or at least it will be if no others have popped up by the time it ships in March.

Bluenio is already in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign for the nio Card, which was initially pitched as a security chain for helping to cut down on the loss of smartphones and wallets. It still does that – it does a few things, actually — but on Friday the company said it would also function as a Bitcoin wallet-slash-payment-card that can transfer money “in a single tap” using near-field communication (NFC) technology.

Easier Bitcoin payments

“It’s a cool way to provide secure Bitcoin payments in a way you currently can’t do,” Bluenio co-founder Ben Hounsell told me. “The way of making a Bitcoin payment right now can be a little bit convoluted…

If you were handed the controls to a satellite, what would you do? Track meteors, ice cream, pipelines, pharmaceuticals, a fleet of trucks, large container ships in the middle of the ocean? Practically every industrial sector company has a use case for the remote monitoring of machinery, transportation, goods and other things in hard-to-reach areas. In the past this has only been possible with  expensive satellite communications in conjunction with other obscure services. Now new nanosatellite technology is radically changing the landscape, making satellite-enabled monitoring and tracking affordable and available to everyone.

In this webinar, our panel will address these topics:

If you could access space at radically lower price points, what would you use it for? Tracking of:

• Transportation (container ships in the ocea
• Pipelines in politically unstable areas
• Power plants, solar plants in the middle of the desert

How affordable are we talking?

Who are the key…

3D Super Mario platformers are among the best video games of all time. With superb titles like Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine and Super Mario Galaxy 2, each entry in the series becomes a staple of its generation – and rightfully so. Forget about a groundbreaking story and top-notch graphics; 3D Super Mario games are all about fun, and Super Mario 3D World is no different.

While strolling along in the Mushroom Kingdom, Mario, Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach come across a never-before-seen transparent Warp Pipe. The four stop to admire the unusual object until a green bug-like creature springs out of it. The creature, known as a Sprixie, is frantically panicking and tries to figure out where the Warp Pipe had taken it. Suddenly, with no explanation and zero dialogue, the big bad Bowser pops out of the same tube, glances at Mario and the gang, traps the…
