Wait on Wink: Fixable flaws in this smart home hub, but a solid user interface on which to build
Earlier this month Quirky spun out its Wink smart home product line into its own separate company with the goal of building software to control the smart home. But as I wrote at the time, first it had to build some hardware in the form of a hub that will control not just the Wi-Fi-based Wink-Quirky gear but also the other smart devices already in the wild.
People who want to go beyond one or two purpose-built connected devices and start automating or trying to tie separate pieces of an existing home automation system together would want to use a hub to help get multiple devices on the same system and use one application instead of several. In general, hubs are not for those who want something to work right out of the box. They generally reward someone who who wants to tinker and tweak their system.

Apple’s Retina MacBook Pros get updates with doubled RAM and slightly faster processors
Apple(s appl) updated its Retina MacBook Pro line on Tuesday, changing the processors in every model and adding a few new built-to order options. There are new Haswell processors in both the 13-inch and 15-inch models as well as price cuts for selected models.
The 15-inch model is now packing a 2.2GHz chip and the high-end stock version comes with a 2.5GHz Intel processor. The more expensive stock rMBP — the closest thing Apple has to a professional mobile workstation — received a price cut from $2600 to $2500. Both 15-inch rMBPs now come with 16GB of RAM, but unfortunately, the built-in graphics card is still the NVIDIA(s nvda) GeForce 750M, a disappointment for those hoping for an update to the GeForce 800M. Apple also added two new built-to-order upgrades for those looking to max their machines out: an option for a 1TB SSD — costing an extra $500 — and an optional upgrade to a 2.8GHz Intel Core…
